Top Beaches in Cornwall

Cornwall is perhaps best known for its coastline and the multitude of beaches that pepper it. Nowhere in England is there such a quantity and variety of beaches – from wide, flat and open windswept beaches akin to many in the Southern Hemisphere, to tiny rocky coves with caves and imposing cliffs. Whether you want a safe place to visit with your family, somewhere to paddle in the shallows and eat ice cream, or if you want the rawness of nature to take your breath away, there are plenty of choices. Herewith, a small selection for starters. Bedruthan Steps, Nr Newquay

One of Cornwall’s most dramatic beaches with a series of rock stacks crossing it which legend says were built by a giant named Bedruthan, who used them as stepping stones to traverse the bay. If you can negotiate the access which is via a very steep slippery staircase, you reach firm golden sands with massive rocks and caves. Tearoom.

Crantock Beach, Newquay

These spacious golden sands are protected by Pentire Point. Bathers are advised to avoid The Gannel. The surfer will discover long hollow rights at the south end over the sand bank (a moveable feast).

Fistral, Newquay

This is the most popular surf beach in Cornwall and the clarity of the turquoise water is unparalleled. There are wide sands even at high tide and cafés for snacks to sustain you while you people watch. Our image was shot on a raw Spring day when the tides were a rolling.

Holywell Bay

This is where Ross Poldark disrobed and walked into the sea. It is overlooked by sand dunes where hidden lies the Surf Shack. It so happens to have one of the best beach breaks on the North Coast.

Kynance Cove, Nr Lizard

At low tide, there are white sands and good bathing (in summer) as well as serpentine rocks shaped over centuries by the rushing tides. At high tide it is too dangerous to swim and difficult to reach the beach. You can (from the coast path)  listen to the roaring noise of blow- holes and watch the violence of nature up close. Get there early at low tide in summer and you could believe you were on a desert island. Cafe. National Trust parking charge.

Perran Sands, Perranporth

One of the most popular dog walking beaches in the south-west. Low tide creates a massive space and a 3-mile hike to reach the distant horizon. Ample parking.

Porthcurno, Nr Sennen

This is a white shell sand beach washed by turquoise sea and surrounded by high granite cliffs - a place of real beauty. Often compared to the World’s finest. Visit at dawn or on a cold winter’s day when you will have it to yourself. The cliff paths that descend from the overlooking coast path are not for the fainthearted.

Porthmeor, St Ives

Just one of St Ives fabulous town beaches which is well served by local eateries and overlooked by the Tate St Ives. Wide flat sands at low tide and popular with all. Surfing at twilight or dusk is a special experience.

Watergate Bay, Nr Newquay

One of the few beaches in Cornwall that you can see from the road. It affords fantastic vistas even when you’re just driving by. Very popular for extreme sports, therefore good for people watching and dog walking out of season. Cafe and Hotel.
