Cycling Country Lanes & Traffic-Free Family Routes

Welcome to our Cycling Country Lanes series. Our purpose is to provide clear, easy to use and easy to follow cycling maps. We illustrate: a) Our commissioned circular routes in purple. b) Traffic-Free Family Cycling Trails (e.g. The Granite Way, Camel Trail, High Peak Trails), and c) The National Cycle Network routes (e.g. NCN27, NCN1 etc).  We work very closely with Sustrans (The National Cycle Network) to provide their up-to-date routes.  The scale of our mapping (from 1:100,000 to 1:126,720) is designed to be ideal for  touring the UK's cycle paths and minor roads. We have been producing these maps for the past 15 years and welcome all feedback. In that time we have also received some wonderful reviews from the Cycling Press - please see below.

“Extremely clear, accurate and easy to follow…laminated surface a real bonus.”  Cycle Touring and Campaigning Magazine

“Perhaps you need a better map – or, more accurately, you need the new collection of Country Lanes and Byways cycling guides from Goldeneye covering beauty spots from the Cotswolds to Cornwall, and carefully prepared to keep you on the bendy and narrow, rather than the fast and four-lane.” Sunday Times Travel section.

The Simplicity of Good Design gives these Maps the edge....for your enjoyment and Peace of Mind. Happy Cycling!

Hampshire is a land of tree-tunnelled sunken lanes, thatched cottages with gardens full of flowers, hazel copses, clear chalk streams and rivers. Despite the ever expanding urbanisation of the south of England, inland Hampshire remains much as it always was with little obvious change to its villages and their network of single-track lanes. As the chalk of the South Downs has lost much of its height by the time it reaches Hampshire most of the ridiging is on the easy side with few climbs that could be classed as more than moderate. The New Forest is, understandably one of the most popular tourist destinations in Britain yet it is easy to escape the crowds on a bike on one of the many well-signed cycle trails that cross the area.

The North Yorks Moors National Park occupies a region of elevated rolling moorland, forming a steep escarpment on the north and west, and a rugged indented coastline to the east.  To the south, the ground slopes more gently towards the Vales of Mowbray and Pickering.  Each of the individual Dales has its own characteristics; from scenic Rydale to lonely Bransdale.  Much of the cycling is over rolling hills on lanes connecting picturesque villages.  The Vale of Pickering makes for a less strenuous ride with quiet flat lanes running through a pastoral landscape.

The Peak District is a remarkable place - from the north, the upturned horseshoe of high, gritstone moors and crags of the Dark Peak extend southwards to the east and west of the contrasting limestone plateau of the softer pastoral landscape of the White Peak itself incised by the valleys of the Derbyshire Dales. These differing landscapes offer some of the best country lane cycling in Britain. In the Tissington, Manifold and High Peak Trails, the White Peak has some of the longest converted railway tracks in the country. A great way for families and inexperienced cyclists to enjoy traffic-free cycling.

Snowdonia is known as the 'Land of the Eagles' in Welsh and conjures up images of steep and craggy mountains crossed by rushing streams.  Whilst this is true for the area around Snowdon, budding cyclists will be pleased to learn that just outside of this area, the terrain is fairly gentle. With a network of quiet country lanes, and a number of old railway tracks recently converted into cycle-ways, the choice of routes is excellent.  Almost all of the routes on this map are found in this more gentle area.  One or two are challenging and some have long uphill sections but most of the riding is not too difficult.  And, when the sun shines, the magnificent views of mountains, moors, and the coastline will make your efforts worthwhile.

Suffolk is one of England's most charming counties to explore by bicycle. The inland scenery is not spectacular by the county's main glory lies in its many attractive villages with their picturesque local architecture.  There are many churches from the modest to the magnificent but almost all with some unique feature of interest.

The routes were researched and selected by Al Churcher.  When he delivered his manuscripts his enthusiasm for cycling in Suffolk knew no bounds. It was for him a brilliant experience....so get out there and enjoy these captivating country lanes...

From the early days of cycling, this area has been a popular destination for the many cyclists living in London and its suburbs. The variety of the scenery lies in the contrast between coastal plain, the bare chalk downs, the more broken and wooded uplands of the Weald, and the intervening fertile farmlands, each running in strips from west to east, and eventually into the sea. The maps includes a varied selection of cycling routes to suit all ages and experience.
